History

 

With beginnings in 2002, and incorporation in 2008, Hemp Genetics International was formed by 3 individuals: Garry Meier, Bert Vandenberg and Kevin Friesen. The goal of HGI remains development of  the best, high yielding regionally adapted hemp grain varieties.

Kevin Friesen A.Ag.
Operations Manager for HGI / Farmer
Laird, Saskatchewan

Kevin Friesen is a pedigreed seed grower with over ten year of experience growing industrial hemp. He started growing hemp on the family farm in 2001. A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan (B.S.A.), Kevin has worked in both the hemp fiber and seed industries for over fifteen years. He has many years of experience advising new hemp growers on all aspects of hemp agronomy, production, and licencing across Western Canada. As the Operations Manager for HGI is the main contact for sales and agronomy advice.

Garry L. Meier P.Ag.
Farmer/Agrologist
Ridgedale, Saskatchewan

Garry was born and raised on a mixed farm in the Ridgedale area of Northeastern Saskatchewan Canada. Garry obtained a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan in 1976. He started farming in 1975 in partnership with his brother. Their farm at its peak size covered some 17,000 acres producing a variety of seed crops, specialty component crops and as well as a number of traditional crops. After 31 years; 2011 would be the last year that Meier Brothers farms would operate and both of the partner's families will head down different trails of life.

Garry continues to farm about 5,000 acres on a custom basis, raise leafcutter bees, and run a small bee export business and a plant breeding company. In addition, He is part of the R & D and Design teams at Bourgault Industries in St. Brieux Saskatchewan serving as the company‚Äôs Corporate Agronomist since February of 2006.   

Garry got involved in the hemp industry with Dr. Dave Hutchison in 1997, grew his first plot in 1998 and has grown hemp every year since. 

With the help of long time friend Dr. Bert Vandenberg, Garry started a Hemp Breeding Program in 2002. Commercial Varieties of note from that program include CRAG, CRS-1 and CFX-1. That breeding effort led to the incorporation of Hemp Genetics  International in 2008.

Albert (Bert) Vandenberg

Professor at University of Saskatchewan
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Bert Vandenberg is a plant breeder at the University of Saskatchewan. He has a wide range of experience in genetic improvement, crop development and marketing of temperate pulse crops including lentil, faba bean, pea, chickpea, and common bean. Outside of the UofS he breeds other crops out of personal interest. He was a founding partner in Spectrum Specialty Seeds Ltd. He became involved in breeding industrial hemp about 10 years ago and this led to the development of Hemp Genetics International.
